IM²C (Singapore)
IM²C (International Mathematical Modelling Challenge) is an international competition on mathematical modelling. The purpose of the IM²C is to promote the teaching of mathematical modelling and applications at all educational levels for all students.
It is based on the firm belief that students and teachers need to experience the power of mathematics to help better understand, analyze and solve real world problems outside of mathematics itself – and to do so in realistic contexts.

About The Event
What is IM2C?
The IM2C is an annual international mathematical modelling challenge involving teams of secondary students (up to 18 years old) from different countries. A real-world mathematical scenario is posed, and each team works for several days using freely available material (from the web and other sources), and submits a report on their solution. The challenge awards prizes to the top teams.
What is the objective of IM2C?
The main aim of the IM2C is to promote mathematical modelling, and to encourage participants to explore the application of mathematics in real situations to solve problems of importance. In addition, the IM2C seeks to develop and enhance students’ ability to visualise, understand and apply mathematics in real-world contexts, providing a valuable opportunity for the practical demonstration of in-school learning and application of theory.
Why must we work in teams?
Difficult problems in society are almost always tackled by groups of people with different areas of expertise. By mobilising students in teams, the IM2C replicates real-world conditions; requiring collaboration and contribution from different skill sets, perspectives and methodologies to achieve overall success. Providing an opportunity for peer-based learning, this aspect of the IM2C also helps to incorporate and reinforce the importance of collaboration among peers, one of the 21st Century Competencies (21CC) currently being promoted.
How can Singapore students participate?
For Singapore, the challenge will take place at two levels: a national level and an international level. That is, Singapore students can take part in the IM2C (international) through the IM2C (Singapore). Based on the outcome of the national competition, the best two teams will represent Singapore at the international level challenge. Schools who are keen to send a team must first register at this website through a team advisor. The team advisor will receive more information about the challenge. Selection of the team members will be done by the school or team advisor.
